Sunday Services every week at 10:15 am
Whether you still have a lot of questions about Jesus or have been following Him for many years, we would love to meet you and encourage you on your journey of faith and discipleship. We encourage you to come and worship and learn with us, even if it is a passing visit.
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’” - Matthew 22:37–39
What are our beliefs?
As Christians, we believe in a sovereign, creator God, who by His word brought the universe and our world into being and continues to sustain them. God had a specific purpose for humans as stewards of the earth but men and women have chosen to go their own way, rejecting God’s life-giving purposes for them.
To continue, we as Christians also believe that all of history pivots on the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth around 2000 years ago. The Son of God took human form as part of God’s rescue plan for the human race. Though completely innocent, Jesus suffered a cruel and unjust death, bearing our guilt and making a way for flawed and rebellious humans to be restored to relationship with God.
In his resurrection he overcame death, giving us confidence that we can share in his eternal life in the presence of God.
When Jesus returned to his Father, He sent the Holy Spirit to fill, strengthen, guide and transform those who put their trust in Him.
As Baptist Christians we believe in believer’s baptism. When someone first puts their trust in Jesus, we encourage them to take this step as a sign of their faith.
What is a Baptist Church?
This is a very good question! Above all we are:
A Family of Believers
For Baptists, the concept of family is central. We believe the church is not defined by a particular building, but rather by a community of believers committed to Christ, to one another, and to God's mission in the world. Within this family, everyone is equal, because everyone has a unique role to play in serving God.
The Local Church: Baptists are naturally grass-roots people. We place a strong emphasis on the local church, viewing each congregation as an independent, self-governing entity. Decisions are made collectively by Church Members and membership is open to any Christian who is ready to commit to serving God in this local church.
Connected with other Baptist Churches: Baptist churches believe in the importance of associating with one another. We intentionally link together regionally, nationally, and internationally to support, encourage, and strengthen our shared mission. Burnham Baptist Church is grateful for our connections with the Eastern Baptist Association.
Believer’s Baptism
Our name stems from the visible practice of believers' baptism. This involves the total immersion of a person in water, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, following their own public profession of faith.
A Personal Choice: Unlike traditions that practise infant baptism, Baptists only baptise those who are old enough to make a conscious declaration of faith of their own free will. We believe faith cannot be chosen for someone else.
A New Start: Each person must experience being "born again" (John 3:3) on their own account—recognising where their lives fall short, turning away from a life without God, and receiving the forgiveness and new life offered through Jesus Christ. Baptism marks a fresh beginning. It is designed to take place close to a person’s initial commitment to Christ, serving as a powerful public milestone as they transition into a life of faith. All are welcome to be baptised as soon as they are ready to make that personal decision.
